Gronings dialect

By bas_nw, 28 May, 2024

Just as East Frisia is considered a remote corner of Germany, Groningen is also far away from our Randstad and its Standard Dutch.

Groningen en Oostfriesland

You can see Groningen and East Frisian as one dialect area, with East Frisian adapted to Standard German and Groningen spelling adapted to Standard Dutch. An example of this is the Groningen-East Frisian word for skate. The pronunciation of the word is almost the same, but the spelling is different.
